Review: Intro:I’m a LONG time fan of the fighting game series and when the announcement for the game was done ALL of my friends who were fans and me jumped for joy. I pre-ordered originally from Best Buy and long story short they sold my copy, cancelled ordered one on here that was about $80, made me wait 3 weeks until telling me their supplier could not get them the game. So one last time on Amazon and I happily received my game […].Game play:The game play is a simple 3 vs 3 tag team battle. Players fight using teams of both Capcom and Marvel characters. First person to lose all health on all 3 characters loses or the one with the lowest life loses. Players can “tag in” their team members anytime, while their opponent also can forcefully switch their team by performing a “snap-back”. The other team members not being used can be also used as an assist who can jump in for a moment (along with the character you have control over currently), perform a move of combo and hop back off screen. There is also a specials bar meter that the player can store and use to pull off devastating special moves. The controls have 2 set of buttons “normal” or “simple”. Normal has 6 button use:Normal:”Light”, “Medium”, “Heavy”, “Special” (Essentially the launch for air combos), “Partner 1”, “Partner 2″Where as simple mode makes it easy for players just starting:”Attack”(Replaces “Light” and allows players to perform combos with one simple button, “Special” (Replacing “Medium” button does moves such as for Ryu, Hadouken), “Hyper Combo” (Replaces “Heavy” and does a bar special.), and the same 3 other buttons. The current roster is 40 (38 without DLC characters). People complain about the character selection but I, along with others see no problem with it. Sure we lost old favorites (Megaman and Gambit to name an example) but we’ve gained new interesting notable ones (X-23 and Amaterasu for example). Future DLC characters are TBA but will eventually be out. There is a training mode to practice new moves and combos. There’s also mission mode which helps you get use to a character as well and improve your game play. Online has player (Friendly/Casual Like) and ranked(Serious/Competition Like) matches. There are online leader boards and statistic trackers so you can review yourself and compare yourself to friends/other players. There is also customizations for player title and emblem (not Black Ops custom level, think MW2 custom level). The gallery has character models and profile viewers to learn more of their origins.Video:Graphics are great and make me not mind the 3D model transaction opposed to the previous 2D model. Also like the comic feel and presentation of the endings with it. The gallery has concept art, character art.Sound:Like the video I am very impressed although it was a given. Players also have the choice to change Capcom characters to either English or Japanese voices. (I prefer Street Fighter and Megaman Characters in Japanese while Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and Resident Evil characters in English voices.) There’s also a gallery to view sounds or characters and BGM.Overall:I hate to admit it but I love it as I do with all or most games. I even bought a Hori Real Arcade Pro V3 SA for it. The game is aimed at casual players with the simplified “normal” controls (rather than a standard fighting game Light, Medium, Heavy punch/kick. or the MvC2 buttons (Light/Heavy Punch, Light/Heavy Kick, Assist 1, Assist 2). I can still have fun with it and my friends who consider me good when I don’t (Ha…) enjoy watching me and sometimes playing against me. The online may be an issue for some, but I have no problems. However like any fighting games there’s also problems with some players (spammers, etc.) so be warned. If you want tips or more info here’s a game guide to it:[…]I give the game a 5/5.

Review: This is a very fun game. If you’re a fan of Marvel VS Capcom or even Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, then this is a game you’ll want to play. I had MvC 2 for PS2 and it got scratched and didn’t work anymore. So I even bought the DLC on the PSN network and played that online. Games are a blast to play with friends or even just battle random people online. If you’re expecting a great story or a bunch of game modes, then you’ll be disappointed. Just straight fighting and that’s all you need. This game is also looks great! The big complaint seems to be only 36 characters compared 56. You’re gonna tell me you honestly used all 56 characters? If you were like me and probably had your main squad for when you played seriously and that was it. Others was just randomly there for the hell of it. Only issue I have with this game, especially the “Special Edition”. I thought I was paying more to get Jill and Shuma, but was very disappointed when I saw that I had to wait until March 15 anyways. I’m also worry that they probably have plans for 56 characters already, and just gonna milk us for DLC. I never cared for the extra disguised anyways, but they’ll probably be releasing new characters to make us pay more. Other then that, I will recommend this game to all those fans of MvC 2.UPDATE – 3/1/2011, I’ve been playing only arcade mode and quick matches, but finally played in a lobby with 4 friends and this is a big fail. You sit there and watch 2 card bump each other and all you see is health bars going down. I have no problems with waiting since we usually play in the same room anyways, but no spectator mode? I can’t see myself being in a 8 player lobby. I hear there’s supposed to be a patch, but you would think this should have been there from the start. Since it’s been there since SF4.

Review: Having grown up with all the versus games in the arcades (and even before that when Marvel and Street Fighter were separate Capcom fighters), this game has a lot of pedigree to live up to and it doesn’t quite make it.I know this review is especially early to write, but I do it now for those looking for a “commoners review” and who are trying to avoid the hysteria of this games release that’s only getting the repeated “It’s great!” reviews from typical gaming websites.I’ll skip most all the new game play changes (like how to pull off combos) as they’ve been talked to death by everyone already. What’s mainly important is how does the game engine run compared to other Versus games?Sadly, this game has a lot to be desired as the balancing is way off and Capcom stuck with their atrocious (Super) Street Fighter 4 online menus that have terrible layouts and mind boggling online issues that don’t cater to any online player (more at the bottom).First, the balancing. You might notice how there are already (warranted) online petitions to ban Sentinel from online play. Well, it’s a warranted request because all projectile characters are pretty much cheese (cheap!) selections while the melee/hand-to-hand characters can only sit back and get ravished from afar. Most all projectiles are double+ hitters and cover both the standing and crouching positions in one shot. This wouldn’t be so bad (it’s still very bad) if the jumping and dashes weren’t suppressed hard.In previous games, a high jump (down/up) would bring you above any obstacle, but still let you control how far over you were jumping and let you semi-control the fall back down. Now most characters can only jump either straight across the screen, past the opponent, or not quite far enough over that you land right in front of the opponent who’s still spamming projectiles at you. If you do block, whether it’s a regular block or and “advanced block” (pushing two buttons in block position together to help push you off the projectile) you’re pushed back to the opposite side of the screen again and are still being bombarded with projectiles. Sentinel is particularly cheap with this as his projectile is just ‘heavy’ attack that can be spammed like crazy with no real pause in between to give you a chance to do anything. And because the jumping is bad, the blocking should have made up for it, but no. Even while blocking, life gets drained off pretty quickly leaving you’re melee character to have to tag out (your other guy will get hit coming in), or taking the hits him/herself until he/she is dead. Swell. We then have characters like Jean Grey/Phoenix who are basically useless against these projectile cheesers (her being useless against everyone, actually). I’m all for balancing and making characters really good at defense while others are good at offense. But her defense is so atrocious that just one simple twenty hit combo will kill her in battle, even with no supers being used. And to top it off, the only way her offense is good is when your other team members have scrapped and saved all the super-meters until it’s maxed out for her to finally come in (if she’s still alive) to pull off her ultra-super. She still sucks at defense after this, her life bar is decreasing automatically, and she has to gain another super bar again to pull off any more super moves. These are specific issues with specific characters, but they reflect how the entire game feels when playing against any opponent. It’s not fun or challenging, it’s just an obstacle to have to get through, like if you were playing Street Fighter 2 where the AI was so bad that the computer could spam Guile and Bisons moves while you still had to hold ‘back’ before pressing ‘forward’ to do it. And if you’re trying to have a decent game of combos and strategy, you can only hope the guy playing with you (in person or online) isn’t just going to choose the characters who can spam you with the over powered projectiles. This gives off a bad sense of stat collecting, with players just earning wins by exploiting a boring mis-balancing issue. You would think you could counter their cheesyness with your own, but then we go on to the next issue…Terrible online options. Once again, they’ve stuck with the Street Fighter 4 system of quick connecting and custom connecting. It’s still the same when selecting your characters; you can’t see who your opponent is choosing until both your teams are set and are loading the match. I guess the surprise isn’t all that bad in theory, but as of right now you never know if you’re getting someone who will only use the cheaper characters or someone who wants to play a game of combos and skill. But what really brings this game down, even worse than the off balanced Balancing, is that you can’t watch people play while you’re waiting. You get a menu with other people’s names and you get to see a life bar between the two who are playing to let you know how far in the match it is, but other than that you’re just sitting there.Call me spoiled, but I’m certainly not waiting in a room with eight slots and sitting last in line, waiting in the dark until it’s my turn. Even more so, watching other people play is a great way to learn new combos and moves. I guess Capcom was too busy with their own “awesome” to think about this issue before releasing the game to the public who would be playing online and not just in some gaming office. What’s worse still is that Capcom made the horrible decision of loading and saving every time you do something online, whether you’ve played or not. Already in the first day in the Ranked Matches category I’ve ‘loaded’ to get to the online screen, ‘waited’ to connect to a quick game, had a window pop up saying ‘failed to connect’, ‘loaded’ another screen to be brought back to the main window, ‘saved’ once I got to that main screen, and repeated the process all over again to just try to play a game. THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE. These games are all about competition and can get very heated in the moment, and if you lose (which I have quite a bit) it’s mind numbingly frustrating to be taken out of the game and having to wait through four load screens to try and get another one going. Only the non ranked matches have a server room where you can join a join and wait in line to fight, but again you gotta wait in line. Capcom could have fixed that by letting the people who are waiting to play just play each other, like in a tournament bracket, but nope. And yet I wouldn’t feel so unnerved about all of these issues if I didn’t have to compare this game to the last teams projects (SF4 and SSF4), which tells me that no DLC will come out to fix these issues and we’re gonna have to wait for a ‘Super Marvel versus Capcom 3’ to even fix half of these problems while giving us a couple of new characters to distract from what they didn’t fix.-Do I feel ripped off by Capcom for buying this game? Time will tell, depending on if their DLC will actually release new characters and fixes for the online and balancing problems AND NOT just releasing an updated game for another $40 in the future.-Do I feel like this game is good or bad? It really depends. My friends and I have played MvC2 for the past ten years and have never felt bored or tired of its game build. It’s still much better than this follow up, so if you have it and like it there’s no need to purchase this game. It’s fun to see new characters being brought in for the new game, but the decrease in playable characters really does come to the forefront when you’re playing it and it feels very limiting when you think back to MvC2 and how many combinations of teams you could make there and what you’ve got here. I’ll be bummed out that I bought this game in a couple weeks when my friends stop playing it and I realize that $70 is sitting on my shelf collecting dust (and that’ll definitely happen if the DLC ends up only being costumes)And even though there are new characters they all still follow the same formulas from before (Deadpool has the same cheepness that Cable did, Sentinel is still a pain, Darmammu is the new Blackheart, etc), only now the controls have changed so that any idiot who knows how to mash buttons can get away with wins without having to know anything other than pressing ‘Light-Medium-Heavy-Super’ in a game. It’s frustrating, it’s made specifically to get new gamers involved since it’s so easy to pick up and play, and there’s no reason to have to put up with it when you have the older games still readily available to play for those that want more strategy with their combinations and tactics.C- grade (for now, I’ll update in a couple of weeks with thoughts then)
