It sounds like the start of a bad joke…or perhaps a confusingly awesome dream. A Physical Therapist, ex-collegiate track athlete, Ivy league grad, Youth Pastor, and some dude with a PhD start having a conversation about cholesterol. And then you realize all those guys are THE SAME GUY, and that guy takes you on a whimsical pilgrimage that results in YOU having a framework for NOT having heart attacks, strokes, and dementia. Employing a smorgasbord of metaphors, pictures, and catchphrases, The Home Security System and the Lipid Neighborhood serves as a valuable reference for clinicians and non-clinicians alike, bringing refreshing relatability to complex biochemical topics. Through a lipid-lens, you’ll learn, laugh, and love your way through its pages…and in the end, you’ll undoubtedly add “life to your years!”

Review: What a delightful find! Bought this book based on personal and professional interest in “bad“ cholesterol and liked the book’s description. But how can a science-based based book on lipids make me snort/laugh out loud AND make me cry more than a couple of times? This one did. Dr. Wageman skillfully uses helpful analogies, on point humor, and truly interesting personal antidotes to instruct both the layman and the scholar about cardiovascular disease prevention. But what he’s really doing here in the book is (effectively) adding life to people‘s years. I thoroughly and highly recommend.

Review: I must admit that I was captivated by most of the book, with solid scientific underpinning. THEN, it appeared as if the last few pages were written by an entirely different person. Sudden discussion in these last few pages about Jesus and the Christian God guiding your outcomes, as opposed to the science discussed over the preceding chapters, turned it upside down for me. Had it ended before such partial comments, I would have been led to give it a better review.

Review: Regardless of your background, you will benefit from the information in this book. Dr. Wageman uses humor and metaphors to make a complex topic understandable and entertaining. He simplifies and defines concepts for the general public, while providing physiological explanations at a more in-depth level for those who want to dive deeper. Dr. Wageman also provides simple, actionable steps that anyone can apply today to start improving their heart health. As a healthcare provider myself, I highly recommend this book.

Review: This is such a great book. I love that I can read about the intricacies of lipids and also laugh at the same time. I believe that teaching with stories and analogies is one of the best ways to learn. This is likely why Jesus taught with parables. It is neat as a clinician to have a great resource as well to dive in deeper into one of the most difficult aspects about treating somebody in primary care. It is also a great resource for those who care about their health and want to be proactive whether they chose the wrong parents or have a bacon addiction that they can’t give up. Thank you, Josh for such a great book. Looking forward to many more.
